James Edmonstone

Principal

Jim has over twenty-five years of experience in areas including financial management, business turnarounds, dispute resolution, federal, state and local taxation, corporate divestitures, runoffs, fraud identification and recovery, and valuation. He has been a principal of SJ&A since its founding.

Mr. Edmonstone's industry experience includes retail, manufacturing, public utility, alternative energy power generation, cable television, property and casualty insurance, reinsurance, retail construction, pulp and paper, petrochemical, and heavy industrial construction/engineering.

Mr. Edmonstone has extensive experience in computing the value of tangible and intangible assets related to contract disputes. He has obtained settlements from manufacturers, vendors, retailer licensees, service providers, taxing authorities, contractors, suppliers and third parties. He directed the shut-down of commercial insurance/reinsurance programs for a major insurance company collecting millions from financially distressed reinsurers, bought out reinsurance liabilities at a profit and negotiated insurance guarantee settlements.

His public utility experience includes holding company subsidiary dispositions and closures, cable television operations, power generation (fossil, nuclear and alternative energy) audit, procurement and contract settlements. 

 

He has advised construction, information technology, manufacturing, petrochemical, pubic utilities, nonprofit, and retail clients in the area of federal, state and local taxation issues and has negotiated tax agreements and settlements with numerous jurisdictions.  He has assisted corporate clients in structuring contracts to maximize tax incentives, litigated tax issues, identified missed incentives, assisted contractors in designing proposals to maximize potential client incentives, and assisted large municipalities with forensic accounting and debt issues.  

He has amassed considerable on-site experience for large construction projects in petrochemical, nuclear and fossil power generation, alternative energy and pulp and paper.  He also developed the finance/controller's organization for the subsidiary of a major engineering/construction firm.

Education and Professional Certifications:

Mr. Edmonstone holds an MBA from the University of Alabama (Birmingham), is a Certified Public Accountant (Illinois, Texas), a Certified Fraud Examiner, and a Chartered Global Management Accountant. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, and the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants.  He has completed the Negotiation, Advanced Negotiation, and Mediation programs at Harvard Law School.
